Welcome to Flagstaff Bound, a special series from the Distance to Empty Podcast, hosted by 3-time Cocodona finisher Kevin Goldberg and 1-time Cocodona finisher Peter Noyes. This series explores the journeys, training, and motivations of runners gearing up for the 2025 Cocodona 250, offering a deep dive into the world of endurance trail running.

In this episode of Flagstaff Bound, we catch up with Coree Woltering, who’s no stranger to the Cocodona course—or the chaos that comes with it. From a low moment in 2021, laying under a cactus for shade as runners passed by, to a complete mental, emotional, and physical reset in 2024, Coree returns with a new mindset: no pressure, just possibility.

He shares what it’s like to let go of the need to win, how changing sponsors and moving cities helped him rediscover joy in the sport, and why he’s more prepared now—not because of training, but because of perspective.

This time around, he’s focused on having fun, staying in the moment, and letting the race unfold however it’s meant to. Whether he finishes in the top ten or just finishes with a smile, Coree’s story is a reminder that sometimes the biggest wins are internal.
