Today I spoke with Jeremy Steele, host of the "Skeptic Pastor" and "Unbelief" podcasts and founder of "Not Church." Jeremy placed his faith in Jesus as a child but has since heavily deconstructed his worldview. He now works to help people find beliefs that work for them.
We touched on many topics, including:
• Walking through Jeremy's experience with Christianity from childhood through adulthood.
• The importance of holding space for those tired of easy answers, spiritual tribalism, and fear-driven certainty.
• Experiencing a lifelong journey of skepticism, questioning, and seeking reliable data for beliefs, both religious and secular.
• Reflecting on the challenges and toxicity of growing up in a conservative evangelical environment and the impact of literalistic interpretations of the Bible.
• Addressing the internal struggle with theological homophobia and the process of coming out as queer, including the pain and isolation.
• Recalling the positive aspects of church community and youth group, while acknowledging the indoctrination and trauma intertwined with those experiences.
• Discussing the evolution of beliefs, openness to science, and the conviction that beliefs should change when presented with better data.
• Advocating for the value of religious practices and community, even for atheists and agnostics, and encouraging empathy, autonomy, and ongoing deconstruction.
• Offering practical advice for supporting the LGBTQ+ community, including leveraging privilege, listening, and creating safe spaces.
Many thanks to Jeremy for sharing his story!
