In this video, Kathleen Wells from Community Care Durham talks about the fear that many individuals experience when they are suffering from depression. "
Watch as Kathleen Wells of Community Care Durham explains some of the most important ways in which you can help a friend in need.
Kathleen explains that one of the most powerful things you can do is simply just listen. Offer a non-judgemental environment and show empathy, even if you don't fully understand what the person is feeling or experiencing.
For many sufferers of depression, small, regular tasks suddenly seem insurmountable. Encouraging someone to reach out for help, or even booking that first phonecall for them, can help in ways you might not even realize. "
Compared to many medical services, in-home respite care is extremely affordable. As Kerry Ann Edwards from Community Care Durham explains, the cost of an in-home visit is only $19.50/hr, for a minimum of 2.5 hours.
Plus, most of the trained, certified personal support workers have each performed around 600 hours of training prior to performing home visits. It's an affordable way of getting your loved one the care they need in the comfort of their own home. "
The COPE Program runs around 50 support groups led by COPE staff and trained volunteers. Each group usually runs for two hours, once a week, and has up to 12 participants.
COPE offers groups for people experiencing anxiety, depression, bipolar disorder, or bereavement. There are also groups for women, caregivers, and plenty of other groups available.
COPE is not therapy - it's just a safe, supportive environment where you can spend some time with people that might be experiencing something similar to you. Sometimes, just being in this environment can make a big difference. "
Watch as Kathleen Wells from Community Care Durham explains how to seek help and open up when you need some support.
A great place to start is with someone you trust, whether it's a friend, your partner, a family member, your doctor, or anyone else you feel comfortable talking to. Once you can tell them how you're feeling, you can start looking for support and services in your area.
Taking the first step, whether it be confiding in a friend or making a phonecall to a health service provider, is the most difficult step. Once you break the ice, you will feel so much better."
Many people are ready to take the first step and start seeking help to tackle their depression, anxiety, or other mental health condition. However, it can be hard to know who you should call for help.
In this video, Kathleen Wells from Community Care Durham explains who you can call to get the ball rolling and start getting the help you need. "
Learn about the COPE Program, which provides support groups across Durham for individuals experiencing depression, anxiety, and many other conditions.
So, what does it take to volunteer with COPE? As Kathleen Wells from Community Care Durham explains, volunteers are thoroughly screened and interviewed after applying. No education or training in mental health is necessarily important, as volunteers undergo all the necessary training.
If you are empathetic, non-judgemental, open-minded, and a great listener, you could be an excellent fit to become a COPE volunteer and make a huge difference in the Durham community. "
In this video, Kathleen Wells from Community Care Durham discusses the COPE Program and explains how it helps individuals throughout Durham.
COPE is a community-based mental health program that provides support to everyone and anyone, including the traditionally underserved rural and remote communities.
COPE is a non-profit organization that relies heavily on volunteers to provide its much-needed services and support groups. "
Watch as Kathleen Wells from Community Care Durham provides some valuable tips for anyone getting ready to make that first call. "
In this video, Kathleen Wells from Community Care Durham explains that although you can't help someone if they won't talk to you, there are steps you can take to gradually ease them out of their comfort zone to start talking about their feelings.
Sometimes, it's easier to talk to a stranger. If you have a loved one who needs support, find a community program in their area and encourage them to make that first call. "
Kathleen Wells from Community Care Durham explains that reaching out to a crisis line or distress center is a great place to start in seeking mental health care.
As well as listening to you, a crisis line can usually provide you with groups, networks, and other resources in your area that may be able to provide you with further help and support as needed."
As Kathleen Wells from Community Care Durham explains, many people she speaks to have had depression, anxiety, or other mental health conditions for more than 20 years before they are finally comfortable reaching out.
Don't be afraid to seek the help you need - making the first call is always the hardest. "
As Kathleen Wells from Community Care Durham explains, in Durham alone there is CCAC, CMHA, COPE, CCD, CAMH, and more!
Sometimes, it can take a bit of back and forth to find the right service for you. Try starting with a general service, by speaking to your community's social services branch or your doctor. Based on your specific situation, they can help you find the best programs and services for you, in your community. "
Caregivers often spend the night at their loved one's home, and don't get the sleep they need because they're essentially ""on call"" through the night. Then, they spend the morning preparing breakfast, organizing medications, cleaning, showering, and then preparing for the next meal.
For many caregivers, this never-ending loop of providing care and support for a loved one can become quite overwhelming over time.

As Kerry Ann Edwards from Community Care Durham explains, Community Care Durham has an in-home respite care program. Many caregivers provide 24/7 support for their loved ones, and don't have a chance to care for themselves or take a break.
Community Care Durham's in-home respite program gives caregivers a chance to step back, regroup, and take a well-deserved and much-needed break for a couple of hours while knowing that their loved one is still in safe hands.

As Kerry Ann Edwards from Community Care Durham explains, caregiver consistency refers to having the same personal support worker looking after your loved one each time they visit.
This provides consistency for both the support worker and the patient, and allows them to build and foster a relationship, feel comfortable together, and develop an understanding of each other.
With Community Care Durham's programs, everything is done to ensure caregiver consistency for patients with regular, scheduled home-care visits.

Start planning. Even if you are able to care for your loved one currently, situations can change quickly. It's a good idea to have a plan in place for if you ever need help caring for your loved one.
All it takes is an unexpected illness, a fall, or something else that changes your situation dramatically. Having a plan in place before this happens makes it a lot easier to deal with curveballs as they arise. After all, life is unpredictable!
As Kerry explains, Community Care Durham has some great programs for caregivers who may need assistance throughout Durham. "
Kerry Ann Edwards from Community Care Durham explains that communication is important on every level for Community Care, including:
- Between personal support workers and primary caregivers/families
- Between primary caregivers and the Community Care Durham office
- Between multiple personal support workers caring for the same patient
Any major changes, like changes in the level of care the patient requires, or changes in medications, need to be communicated directly to the Community Care Durham office, to ensure all caregivers and personal support workers are aligned.
Communication between the office and the family, and the office and the worker, is critical. "
Community Care Durham only hires fully-trained, certified personal support workers. Once an assessment is done and a client is matched with a worker, the worker is prepared for the specific patient they will be meeting.
As Kerry Ann explains, the primary caregiver (often a family member) is ideally present the first few times to ensure that the personal support worker and the patient are comfortable with each other."
Kerry Ann Edwards from Community Care Durham explains that a great place to start is with your doctor, or your loved one's doctor. You can simply let them know at your next appointment that you feel as though you need some help or support, and they can point you in the right direction.
For many programs, like Community Care Durham's in-home respite care program, you can also self-refer - feel free to call Kerry Ann and the team directly to talk about getting some help with your caregiving duties.

In this video, Kerry Ann Edwards of Community Care Durham says that in many cases, caregivers wait too long to ask for help. By the time they do reach out, they’re at or past their breaking point.
We get it - you want to be the person to take care of your loved one, but it’s OK to ask for help. You need to take care of yourself, too, and that can’t happen if you devote 100% of your time to your loved one.
When you reach out for help, you can have more time to get your own life back on track. You can still help your loved one, but it will be a much healthier situation for both of you.

In this video, Joanne Greco-Fiore of the Scarborough Health Network explains what she means when she talks about the glycemic index.
Simply put, the glycemic index is a way to measure the quality of carbohydrates.
The higher the glycemic index score, the bigger an impact it will have on your blood sugars.
This can help to identify which carbs are good and which are bad, which can be a huge help for people who are watching what they eat and for diabetes patients as well.

This is what Joanne Greco-Fiore of the Scarborough Health Network and other dietitians ask their patients when they start working with them.

Joanne Greco-Fiore of the Scarborough Health Network encourages many of her patients to keep a food journal.
What is a food journal? It’s a log of everything you eat throughout the day, from something as small as a single almond to a meal as big as an entire steak dinner.
You keep notes of what you ate and when you ate it. This helps patients realize just how much they are eating throughout the day, and it can also help explain why their eating habits are the way they are.

In this video, Joanne Greco-Fiore of the Scarborough Health Network talks about type 2 diabetes and insulin resistance.
Insulin resistance means that the cells in your body are having a hard time accepting the sugar that the body’s insulin is trying to deliver.
If the cells cannot accept the insulin, the sugars just sit in the bloodstream. This causes the high blood sugar levels found in diabetic patients.

Don’t drink your calories!
This is what Joanne Greco-Fiore of the Scarborough Health Network tells a lot of her patients.
Joanne sees many patients with diabetes who eat well-balanced meals and don’t snack too much but they cannot seem to lose weight.
The reason? They’re drinking their calories.
The fastest and easiest way to cut calories is to quit drinking them. So toss out that cola and don’t pour yourself such a big glass of OJ every morning and watch your caloric intake and weight decrease!
