If you’ve ever dreamed of being a freelance illustrator while travelling the world, you’ll appreciate this conversation I had with digital nomad, Magoz.
Typically I answer your questions about illustration. In this episode, I pick a fellow illustrator’s brain and get some answers out of him!
Magoz is an award-winning conceptual illustrator and animator. He’s worked for clients around the world, including the New York Times, Wall Street Journal, and Scientific American (among others). He’s incredibly prolific and active online, and you’ve definitely seen his work in illustration annuals and awards shows like 3 x 3 and Communication Arts.
His illustrations are highly conceptual and minimal — a look that deceptively seems easy to reproduce at first, but that’s the power of his images. He can convey a universally recognizable idea with just enough detail and originality to make you look twice.
What I like about Magoz’s work is the instsant recognizability of his style, which is so decisive and consistent, image after image, year after year, but somehow he is able to keep it fresh and surprising every time. He is a master of visual rhetoric, constantly and imaginatively finding altnernative and uncommon ways of seeing the common.
One of the most fascinating things about Magoz is that, over the past few years, he’s been illustrating on the move, travelling around the world. He’s lived in Bristol, UK, Malyzsia, Thailand, Vietnam, Madrid, Helsinki, and now, Sweden. I caught up with him in his current location, Malmö, Sweden.
I’m super excited to share my conversation with him, and if it’s your first time learning about his work, I’m pleased to introduce you.
We ended up talking for over 90 minutes. There was so much good in the episode that I decided to just keep the whole thing and split it into two episodes!
