Lawmakers are taking up legislation that tackles central planks of Illinois Gov. Bruce Rauner's pro-business priorities.

Proposals addressing workers compensation, changes to the civil legal system and a freeze on properties taxes are being heard Wednesday in Senate committees.

The package of bills reflects a scaled-back version of the Republican governor's "turnaround agenda" filed earlier this week in both chambers.

Rauner's office says the committee action will clarify Democrats' intentions on the reforms. Rauner says the state "cannot ask taxpayers to put more money into a broken system."

Rauner wants his package of legislation approved before he'll consider signing a budget.

Democrats meanwhile are advancing budget bills outlining a $36.3 billion spending plan for next year that Republicans oppose.

The measures are SB884, SB994 and SB1046.
