After a particular incident (spoilers redacted), Leif broke down, leaving Wither to manage the body while she recovered from the shock and loss of much of her independent spirit (the white petals). While Wither lived longer than she usually did in the body, everyone around her kept calling her Leif.
Of course, they were all surprised at her sudden change of personality. She didn't want any physical contact despite Leif being (in)famous for her hugs and chirpy optimistic talk. But Wither isn't like that. And she can't be that. And so her frustration builds as she anxiously waits Leif to return.
