IK Handles and SolversIn Simple Words: An IK Handle is the invisible wire or handle you select to move the limb. The Solver is the math engine running behind the scenes that decides exactly how the joints bend.Example: Think of an IK handle like a string tied to a puppet’s wrist. When you pull the string, the whole arm reacts based on the type of knot (solver) you used.Where & Options in Maya 2023: When you open Skeleton Create IK Handle $\square$, you will see the Current Solver dropdown with two major options:Single-Chain Solver (ikSCsolver): Best for simple, straight-line setups (like a mechanical piston or a simple spine). The joints move purely on a single plane without extra rotation control.Rotate-Plane Solver (ikRPsolver): Crucial for biological limbs (arms and legs). It gives you a Pole Vector, which lets you control exactly which way the elbow or knee points using an external control object.3. FK (Forward Kinematics)In Simple Words: Moving a chain of bones from the start forward. You select a single joint, rotate it, and every child joint down the line follows along. You must manually rotate the shoulder, then the elbow, then the wrist to pose an arm.Example: An astronaut waving their hand in zero gravity, or a dog wagging its tail. The movement starts at the base and ripples down the chain.Where in Maya 2023: You don't need a special tool for FK. Simply select any joint in your hierarchy, hit E to activate the Rotate Tool, and rotate the joint.4. ConstraintsIn Simple Words: Forcing one object to follow, look at, or mimic the properties of another object without them being in a parent-child relationship.Example: A character picking up a coffee mug. You constrain the mug to the hand control so it sticks to the fingers when the hand moves, but you can turn the constraint off later to set the mug back down.Where & Options in Maya 2023: Go to the top menu: Constrain. The primary rigging options include:Parent: Forces an object to follow both the position (Translate) and rotation (Rotate) of a target.Point: Forces an object to follow only the position ($X,Y,Z$) of a target, ignoring its rotation.Orient: Forces an object to mirror only the rotation of a target.Aim: Forces an object to always look directly at a target (perfect for rigging eyes or camera targets).Pole Vector: Used specifically with an ikRPsolver to map where an elbow or knee should point.
