Kirthika Alwar was chosen from a pool of applicants to receive the Dance In The District award from the department of cultural affairs- city of Los Angeles.
Kirthika performs BharataNatyam, a traditional Indian dance. She practices this ancient dance not only for its physical strength, stamina, and focus but also for the regeneration and revival of her personal forte and for guiding her through obstacles growing up as a teenager in LA.
In this video, Ms.Alwar uses a fast-paced traditional Thillana to represent her teen pressures and her success in using dance as her source of resurgence and resilience. Currently, she works with children and teaches them the same dance that helped her overcome her barriers.
