If you’re in Wales and you hear the faint sound of wailing in the night, be wary before you seek to offer help … because for you, or a loved one it could be too late.
I’ll warn you now that the Irish Banshee isn’t the only bad omen in folklore. In Wales we have an equally sinister siren.
Those who’ve experienced the ghastly cries of the Cyhyraeth are rarely willing or able to tell the tale.
The Cyhyraeth is described as a spectral, disembodied voice whose anguished weeping is said to precede a tragedy. The harbringer of a single death in the family or suffering on a larger scale such as a pandemic.
Perhaps the most disturbing element of this legend is that the quieter the cries … the closer the Cyhyraeth is!
