You are paying for coffee. The person behind the counter asks whether you had the apple tart as well. It is a transaction, and there are dozens like it in a week, and almost none of them contain any contact at all. Eckhart Tolle describes what can happen in that moment instead. You look at the other person for about three seconds, and if you can sense your own stillness while you do it, you sense theirs. Something passes between you. The exchange is still trivial. The contact is not. That, he says, is what the word love actually points at, before it was worn out by everything else it has been used for. Recognising another person as essentially the same as you, underneath whatever their personality happens to be like. Which is not the version most of us learned. That version says stay with me, I want you, I cannot live without you. And he is blunt about it. I cannot live without you is never love, and the arc from the wedding to the divorce is what that misunderstanding looks like played out over years. He then turns to the instruction to love your neighbour as yourself, and offers his own reading of it. He is careful to say this comes from intuition rather than scholarship. His sense is that it was never meant as a command, because commands do not work here, and two thousand years of sincere effort suggests he has a point. He reads it instead as a description of what happens by itself. Find the spacious stillness in yourself, and you recognise the other as yourself. Not an order to obey. A consequence. Eckhart goes much further into this in the full session. Join Eckhart Tolle Now to watch. 👇
