The concept of “giving up”
I have a friend who COULD easily run a marathon if he wanted to but that didn’t stop him from using a wheelchair like a normal person! So brave! He overcame his unfortunate circumstances by exercising as little as possible. (/s)
There’s this concept that if you’re disabled you should try your best to fit in with abled people until it’s impossible for you not to anymore. Only use a wheelchair or mobility aide if you are unable to walk at all, never admit you’re disabled if you have an invisible disability. Hide it. It’s shameful. If you have an undiagnosed condition, just work out a lot! Even if it causes pain, irreparable damage, or worsens your symptoms!
In this opposite world, would joining a marathon be considered showing off? Giving up on trying to blend in with the disabled normal people by bragging that you can use your legs to run 26 miles? Would people find it disgusting that you aren’t even TRYING to fit in anymore?
