If you've just purchased a used vehicle here is one thing you may want to consider doing right away. That thing? Remove the previous owners' aftermarket parts and accessories.
Let's face it, people love to accessorize their cars and trucks. This process is what makes a car our own. In order to do this we need to buy and install aftermarket parts. Those parts may be things like an aftermarket radio or even suspension components like shocks and such. But, a few questions arise here. First, how good are the parts? And second, how good was the install?
There are lots of fantastic aftermarket parts out there. Some that people may even consider to be better than what was installed by the OEM. But even those top quality parts can fail. And when one of those parts fails it ads to the complexity of your vehicle and trying to diagnose a fault. This can be an absolute headache for a DIY'er and even a professional garage.
On top of the issue with parts failing we have the issue with the install. The install may be very good (or very bad) and last a while. But those added wires may have not been crimped perfectly leading to a poor connection which can cause various problems. Or, those added shocks may not have been tightened down fully leading to a weird clunking sound that's hard to diagnose.
The moral of the story is, you may want to remove or at least inspect any and all aftermarket parts and/or accessories that have been installed on your new-to-you vehicle. Chances are, you may just find something peculiar and save yourself from a bigger issue down the road.
