New Netflix film Don't Say Good Luck, starring Sunny Sandler—the daughter of film actor Adam Sandler—is one for the theatre kids. And fittingly, to celebrate the series' release, Playbill has the ultimate interview to share, with Broadway royalty Idina Menzel (with a framed Wicked poster in the shot behind her!) in conversation Sandler about the show.
The film, directed by Julia Hart, released August 14. It also stars Melanie Lynskey, Tony winner Bebe Neuwirth, Max Greenfield, Jack Champion, Stephanie Beatriz, Scarlett Estevez, Jon Lovitz, Emma McNulty, Elyse Bell, and Steve Buscemi. Hart, Laura Hankin, and Jordan Horowitz wrote the screenplay based off a story by Hart.
In their conversation surrounding the film's release, Menzel and Sandler exchanged their tips on conjuring emotions and crying on cue to their favorite sad songs, their thoughts on motherhood (and being a daughter), which echoes the film's central arc, as Sandler's character, Sophie Birenbaum, is excited to lead her high school production of Waitress—until her joy is disrupted by the news that her mother's cancer has returned.
