The Vjosa in Albania and Greece is one of the last free-flowing rivers left in Europe and is important for local jobs, biodiversity, and the communities who rely on it. However, the river has been under threat from development such as hydropower dams which are both unsustainable and damaging to the land.
Here, i-D meets NGO's, experts, and locals who are part of the community fighting to save one of Europe’s last wild river. They explain how the river is deeply embedded in the native culture, folklore and history and why it is imperative the river is protected for the future by designating it a National Park.
To raise awareness for the cause and put pressure on the Albanian government to act, we follow the younger and older generations as they come together to support the global campaign and coalition "Save the Blue Heart of Europe", which is also supported by outdoor clothing b-corp, Patagonia. On the 13th of June, the Albanian government took the historic step of signing a commitment to collaborate with Patagonia and the Save the Blue Heart coalition on the establishment of a Vjosa Wild River National Park.
