Ice Cold Passion retraces the extraordinary 1932 Greenland expedition undertaken by filmmaker Arnold Fanck and actress-turned-filmmaker Leni Riefenstahl during the production of SOS Iceberg — one of the boldest and most hazardous film shoots in cinema history.
Through archival footage, diaries, expert interviews and rare behind-the-scenes material, the documentary reveals a complex relationship defined by artistic ambition, rivalry, and extreme physical danger. Isolated in Arctic landscapes with unpredictable ice, brutal weather and limited resources, Fanck and Riefenstahl clashed and collaborated in equal measure, pushing the boundaries of early mountain-film cinematography.
The film also explores how this expedition became a turning point in both careers: Fanck’s decline as cinema modernized, and Riefenstahl’s controversial rise as she became associated with Nazi propaganda.
