A new study out of the University of the Basque Country applied network analysis and multivariate statistics to more than 500 figures across nine Magdalenian caves around the Bay of Biscay, dated to between 18,500 and 14,000 years ago, and found a consistent core group, bison, horses, and ibex, appearing together again and again, evidence that Ice Age cave art followed recurring organisational rules rather than functioning as isolated ritual marking.
