In this episode we search for the best archaeology happening in central Britain.
In Coleshill, near Birmingham, on a huge construction site, a team from Wessex Archaeology has been called in to investigate the site of a lost Elizabethan manor house that was torn down at the beginning of the 19th Century. As the earth is scraped away something completely unexpected yet of potentially huge significance is revealed. It's the lower walls and moat of a Medieval gatehouse built in the 14th century, a structure that was completely unrecorded. Alice visits the site to witness the extraordinary evidence being uncovered, including hundreds of musket balls and hundreds of tell tale musket ball indentations in the stonework. The only logical conclusion is that either there has been a lot of target practice taking place against these powerful walls or it was the site of a skirmish. History tells us this manor house was on the road to what was thought to be the first engagement of the English Civil War in 1642, so could this be evidence of an even earlier skirmish, meaning it could have been the very first military action of that traumatic period?
