The 1963 memorandum, prepared by the RAND Corporation, focuses on applying Monte Carlo techniques to the PERT (Program Evaluation and Review Technique) management system.
An experimental computer program has been developed for the IBM 7090 computer to perform Monte Carlo simulations of PERT networks. The program can handle up to 1,000 activities, supporting uniform, triangular, and beta duration distribution functions. The program's output includes the project duration density function and the criticality of each activity.
It has been observed that most computational time is spent generating random numbers. For a network of 200 activities and 10,000 samples, the running time is approximately 20 minutes for triangular distributions and about 5 minutes for uniform distributions.
