In this demo I try out 2 new colors. I wanted to see how easy it was to lift out the Neutral Tint. (A little more difficult than I thought it would be). After using my new multiple palette setup I think I finally found a system I could live with! Note: this photo was from my film days. Without HDR the shadows are just about pure black. This painting was less than hours total. Enjoy!

The Art of Tom Gallovich 2026-03-18 | Quick demo to test Fabriano Artistico 300lb Cold Press. This paper was different compared to the Arches that I always use. The paper allowed the color to be carried to the outer perimeter of each new wet area. Thus giving each stroke a subtle darker outline. Also color lifts out rather easily. For me this creates a drawback with a layering problem. I had to be extra careful not too lift previous layers even thought they were completely dry. I used a hair dryer and was able to lift previous layers rather easily. For me color lifts easier than Arches. I will further test this paper to see what I can do with it. The 300lb is nice to work with.

Ropes - Watercolor & Ink

The Art of Tom Gallovich 2025-11-14 | This demo is a 20x16 study of ropes on a boat. Using ink to further define our shapes and Frog Tape to make some basic corrections. I used rough and sketchy lines to render the old worn out frayed ropes. If we were rendering an object such as glass then smooth straight lines would be a must. The ink line work will help define our shapes further than the loose watercolors will. If you are new to watercolors this demo may be for you!

Start to finish about 100 hours for this traditional watercolor.
In this painting I establish my patterns and values early. Using a #2 brush for the entire painting gives me the opportunity to draw as I paint. I must be critical where my shapes are without any help from a pencil drawing. The fig tree was photographed just after a rain shower making the colors more vibrant. I will be the first to admit this painting was confusing sometimes.

With a slight detour of rebuilding my entire drawing board and a quick trip to the ER Room I finished this painting. Enjoy!

Look for Qorpak wide-mouth jars (straight side) 43-400 cap size. IMPORTANT to have the Green Thermoset PTFE (Teflon) Caps. The plastic lids will shred over time (Black Caps).

The Thermoset PTFE cap liners are very popular with lab work. They resist most chemicals and acids so they are hard to find sometimes. If you Google “Qorpak 1oz. Demo Setup Update

The Art of Tom Gallovich 2024-08-22 | Drawing board updates along with addition lighting and adjustment updates. I replaced a Viltrox VL 200T light with an additional Smallrig RC 120D video light. The Viltrox had to be much closer to the painting to provide the light needed. This would place the light in the video when working with larger paintings.

I am now using Armstrong Ceiling Tile as a watercolor board. Although they come in a case you should be able to purchase them separately. These 24" x 24" tiles have their own UPC sticker on each tile.The ceiling tile are made from a foam core type PVC material and work well for watercolor boards. Check them out if you wish.
