In addition to that, he had the most insane knowledge of obscure music out of anyone I’ve ever known. I have him to thank for so many bands I’ve come to know and love that were regulars on KOTJ. Cryptic Cross was his project and naturally it kicks ass. They had other recordings out there that have been lost to time, please hit me up if you have them. I lost contact with him when covid started: he dropped out of all social media and his phone # stopped working, and all our mutual friends didn’t know how to reach him. You hardly ever meet characters like him especially nowadays and he will be missed. RIP Stik

The Santa Barbara/Goleta metal scene was pretty sleepy in the later 2000s, glad Civil Unrest was around then to keep it real. A little history on the band: Civil Unrest was started in 2003 by members of Black List, a SB area punk band from the 80s. Civil Unrest released the full length Swept Away in 2004 and then went through some lineup changes. What you’re hearing now is an unreleased album recorded between 2006-2008. Civil Unrest singer Damien Franco also sang for Thee RKaLiens, which was the last incarnation of RKL (minus Jason of course) featuring Chris Rest, Joe Raposo, Boz Rivera and Chris Flippin. These recordings kick ass, enjoy!

Back in the late 90s, the Santa Barbara CA scene was alive and well. There was a good amount of punk/crust/emo/ska/hardcore etc bands but not really any straight forward thrash/death metal bands except for Ruckus. This album features the 3 piece lineup of the band which eventually became 5. Fight Your Own War was recorded later at the drummer’s house and is the only song to feature the 5 member lineup (with yours truly on bass). Obie from that lineup currently sings for Pathology. It was tons of fun ripping it up around town with these guys. We even got an opening gig for Dee Dee Ramone somehow which is still one of the raddest shows I’ve ever played to this day. Enjoy!

Saw these guys play around SoCal a few times in the late 90s, they were really good live. All members played in many HC bands of the time and the singer/guitar player went on to be in Mike V and the Rats. There’s four tracks listed on the album but there are five- would make more sense if the titles of the first two tracks were flipped but who knows. There are a ton of bands called The Third Degree out there and this is the best one I've ever come across, enjoy!

I saw them about 10 years ago as well— back then they played a 22 min long Krautrock epic while this time around, they had morphed into more of a hard/heavy space rock sound. The recording is off a 1-sided lathe cut 7” and the cover is printed on clear plastic. Although the show was a super spreader event, they were one of the better bands I’d seen in a while and it was a good night. Enjoy!

One of my old bands played a show with these guys in Ojai CA around 10 years ago and they absolutely slayed it. While there is bass on this recording, there was no bassist that night and the triple guitar harmonies were alive and well. All pics are taken from their now dormant facebook page, except for one of the singer/guitar/bass player Chris that I used from a Blasting Concept 45. Napalm Death have the Iron Maiden thing going on where in their long career, they've had 2 different singers that defined 2 different eras. Some people only like the original singer's era although their time with the band was way shorter than the rest of their career. So here's the longer lasting line up doing the OG era's tune. Also Barney was wearing a Naked Raygun shirt!

I’m honored to have this legendary proto-punk masterpiece on my channel! Hailing from Oklahoma, they burned bright and fast for around a year but thankfully left these recordings in their wake. Tracks 1-11 are the original self-titled album from 1976, tracks 12-13 are unissued cassette recordings and tracks 14-21 are rehearsal recordings. Many of the rehearsal tracks appear on the album but some vastly differ from album versions. Additionally, I have altered (or corrected if you will) the sound on the rehearsal tracks as you could basically only hear guitar and vocals blasting before. The left and right channels have a bit of separation but the drums and everything else come thru now, trust me it’s worlds better then it previously was. I’m puzzled why it was ever released that way. The rehearsal tracks have some surprisingly good moments, especially on the solo of John Cale’s Gun. Enjoy!!

This was one of the earliest cds I ever bought about 25 years ago when I was 15 or so. I would skateboard in my driveway and blast it out my bedroom window to listen. An incredibly solid collection of miscellaneous recordings, rarities and outtakes including tracks off the legendary This Is Boston Not LA comp and the original version (and superior version in my opinion) of American Town. My cd insert is long gone but I remember there being great liner notes about every song with some very entertaining and personal stories. Fantastic band, and I still love em just the same to this day

More John Du Cann and Atomic Rooster on Kick Out The James. Why? Because they’re one of the best! This album of demos is all John with drum machine programming by Paul Hammond. The songs were intended for an album that sadly never got properly recorded or released. How I wish these tunes could’ve seen the light of day with the production and lineup of their previous self titled album from 1980, a personal fave of mine. Especially the first 3 tunes, dammit! The bonus tracks include the A and B sides from their 2 Polydor singles, a live version of Devil’s Answer from 81, and a rerecording of their hit Tomorrow Night from 81 that appeared on the 12” single version of End Of The Day. I was actually in the process of digitizing that 12” but noticed this album had disappeared from Youtube so it’s all ending up here instead. RIP John, Vincent and Paul

For all you out there who were too cheap to buy the new Dischord Boxset (like myself) and wanted to hear this, you’re welcome. There’s actually a Slinkees demo already up on youtube with additional songs but it’s missing the tracks Conservative Rock and Who Cares? which are featured here. If you’re wondering how I got a hold of this, my buddy was sent a boxset that had 2 of these but no Government Issue (which was corrected). Some fun facts if you don’t own this or are unenlightened: Slinkees only played one show in 1979. Henry Rollins wrote the lyrics for Go To Alaska. The Slinkees morphed into Teen Idles with a new singer and kept the tunes I Drink Milk and Trans Am amongst others. Ian originally only played piano but could pluck out Smoke on the Water on one guitar string which “qualified him to play bass” haha

I got this tape on RSD about 5 years ago from the record store I worked at. The show was recorded not even 2 months after Cliff’s death, must’ve been a whirlwind for the guys. Nevertheless they put on a ferocious performance and Newstead’s bass solo is pretty sick considering what huge shoes he had to fill, badass show all the way through. Somehow there are no copyright restrictions on this so it’s 99.9% guaranteed it will get taken down. The tape also starts out with Morricone’s Ecstasy Of Gold which I cut to avoid further copyright issues. You will notice some sort of noise gate/compression on the crowd and in between songs as the device I used to transfer the tape apparently has that built in. But all the songs themselves come through loud and clear. Lastly, there is a tape cut in the original audio on Fade To Black. Enjoy it while you can!!! REST IN POWER CLIFF
