Contre-Jour is a muted string quartet written in the harmonic language of Fauré and Debussy.
🎶 The same voices move between muted and open from one bar to the next, which is a colour change no live quartet can make without breaking the line.
In this video, Vincent shows: 🎵 What a mute actually does to a bowed instrument, why the impressionist harmony in this piece depends on it, and the three things that separate a sampled string section from four people playing in a room: bow speed, evolving vibrato, and the small timing offsets between players. 🎻
