If I wasn't trying to prove myself to God or others anymore, what would come of my productivity? What would drive me?
I got really honest with a friend and his response suppressed me.
"Isaac, you need to find a new fuel," he told me.
I was confused at first, but then it sunk in. So much of my motivation throughout the years has been to get people and God to approve of me.
Dr. Larry Crabb spoke of humans having these two core needs:
SIGNIFICANCE & SECURITY
When we look to people to fulfill those needs, we run dry - we get burnt out - that's where I was.
The life-changing truth is this - both those needs are met in Jesus and when we internalize that truth we can live out of joy and gratitude.
God wants us to release our angst and desperate plea for attention in exchange for security and significance in Him.
Peace with God and satisfaction in Him ushers in a new fuel: joy and gratitude.
This is the new fuel God wanted me to step into.
