Is this βPublic Transparency?β I think not. I went to a public town hall meeting in London, Ontario (Ward 4) that centred around the topic of the homelessness crisis. The meeting was hosted by city councillor Susan Stevenson and all were welcome. I set up a camera to record the discussion for people who couldn't be there. I have the equipment and I'm sitting there anyway, so it's what I typically do at these events - because why not be helpful?
But then, something weird happened: Councillor Stevenson approached me and asked me to stop filming. She even moved my camera and tripod without my permission. Security got involved, and I was told I had to leave if I kept recording. I stopped recording so I could stay and listen to the event, because I was mostly there to listen and ask my own questions.
The weirdest part? Her own husband was filming the entire meeting on his phone the whole time. This seems like a major double standard.
So, in this video I break down what happened and would love to figure out my big question: are citizens allowed to film public meetings or not?
Let me know what you think or if you know someone who I should speak with for more info.

![Whats it like living Car-Lite in London?
What is the future of transportation in our cities? The turns have tabled in this special episode. Journalism student Will Bruce (from Fanshawes Almost 107 radio show) interviewed me (Ben Durham). This is that recording.
A note, this was recorded in 2024. Took me a while to get to the edit. Whoopsies.
We dive into the daily life of biking across the city, even in freezing winter weather. We discuss Londons big plans for bus lanes and bike paths, and why these changes are so important for our growing city.
I also share the history of Londons streetcar system and what we can learn from cities around the world. Youre probably used to that one, though.
This is a conversation about making our city a better, safer, and more affordable place for everyone to live.
