Some of rock’s greatest songs never make the album. Instead, they get buried in a vault and forgotten for decades. Today I’m going to unearth some of the greatest songs that should’ve been massive hits, but they were never released. It’s a goldmine, my friends. Including a song written by rock icon Freddie Mercury, who was secretly dying. Carrying this heavy burden alone, he channeled his grief into a haunting meditation on mortality. But it never got picked for an album. Then, after he died, the tapes became so badly damaged the song couldn’t be saved… then a miracle happened. Then there's Michael Jackson, one of the greatest pop stars who ever lived, who recorded a song so brilliant, it could have anchored the biggest-selling album of all time… if it had been recorded just a few weeks earlier. But today, it still hasn't been officially released, even though it’s one of MJ's best songs. And finally, there the singer-songwriter John Mayer, who was so devastated by a breakup that he couldn’t bear to set foot in the city where his ex lived… Instead, he wrote a song about it. And for decades, he has refused to make a studio recording of it. As a live song, it’s become the stuff of legend. Le’ts do it.

You are going to thank me for a few of these… let’s get into it. In at #9, it’s AC/DC and the unreleased song is I’m a Rebel… written and sang by the other Young brother, Alex. Going back to September 1976 AC/DC was on fire, tearing through a European tour while simultaneously recording material for Dirty Deeds Done Dirt Cheap. In the studio, the band almost always had their two secret weapons locked in — producer duo George Young and Harry Vanda. But on this particular stop in Germany, the guys went off-script. The Young brothers — Angus and Malcolm — connected with their older brother Alex while passing through.
Alex had carved out his own music career in Europe with a psych-rock outfit called Grapefruit. So the three of them seized the moment. They booked a session at Studio Maschen, just outside Hamburg… without George and Harry. Alex brought a song with him he'd written. It was a stomping, radio-ready punk rock anthem called "I'm a Rebel." It had a big driving rhythm and massive sing-along chorus. However, when Bon Scott showed up to the session, he was completely sloshed… way too far gone to handle the rapid-fire vocals Alex had written. So Alex stepped up to the mic and sang lead instead. Bon, for his part, lined up behind Alex and belted out the backing vocals, adding his trademark grit to the choruses. Angus and Malcolm locked in on guitar; I’m a Rebel got recorded, mixed, and pressed onto a master tape. But then the hangover set in. Once everyone sobered up and listened to the track… the mood shifted. And Malcolm and Angus pulled the plug on it.
