In 2005, Seattle Public Library checkouts were 100% print books. Watch what happens over the next 20 years.
This is an animated pie chart tracking exactly how Seattle Public Library checkouts split between print books, ebooks, and eaudiobooks — every month, from April 2005 to June 2026.
It starts as a solid wedge of print, because digital lending genuinely didn't exist in the system yet. Then ebooks and eaudiobooks appear in September 2005 as a sliver, and grow, year after year, until they don't just catch up — they overtake print entirely.
The data is real: aggregated server-side from Seattle's own Open Data portal, from a 41-million-row checkout dataset, not estimated or interpolated. Nothing here is guessed.
