Singapore businesses are starting to appear in Japan - from Ya Kun Kaya Toast and iJOOZ to Bacha Coffee, TWG Tea, Chatterbox, and even Singapore-style laksa in Japanese supermarkets.
But can Singapore brands really survive in Japan?
In this video, I visited Tokyo to try different Singapore-related businesses and see how they are doing in the Japanese market. Some are selling very local Singapore flavours. Some are using luxury branding. Some are being adapted completely for Japanese customers.
As a Japanese person who has lived in Singapore for about 7 years, I wanted to understand why some Singapore brands seem to work in Japan - while others struggle.
Is it about taste?
Branding?
Price?
Localisation?
Or is Japan simply a very difficult market to enter?
