What happens when you take the most rugged electric truck GMC has ever built and push it to its limits? I traveled to Michigan for the first media drive of the all-new 2026 GMC Sierra EV AT4 to find out if this six-figure powerhouse can really handle the kind of off-roading most EVs only dream about. On paper, the Sierra EV AT4 is a game changer: 725 horsepower, 775 pound-feet of torque, up to 12,300 pounds of towing, and an industry-leading max range approaching 500 miles. The tech package is stacked with four-wheel steering, Super Cruise for hands-free highway driving, a ruggedly premium cabin, and DC fast charging that can add 100 miles in just 10 minutes. These stats set a new bar for electric trucks,if they hold up beyond the brochure.
But here’s the real test: how does all that promise translate when you leave the pavement behind? @gmc let me loose on some seriously gnarly trails, with deep mud, ruts, and tight turns that would make even seasoned off-roaders sweat. While the Sierra’s all-terrain tires, 2-inch lift, and clever terrain mode handled most obstacles with confidence, the truck’s nearly 9,000-pound curb weight and lack of true locking differentials became obvious limitations in extreme conditions. There were a couple of tense moments where I genuinely wondered if we’d need a rescue crew,proof that real-world adventure is never as easy as the spec sheet makes it look.
Even with those caveats, the 2026 Sierra EV AT4 stands out for its combination of range, comfort, and capability. For most drivers, this truck’s unique blend of hardcore utility and advanced EV tech is unmatched.
