Last Saturday I had the pleasure of presenting my take on the future of AI and where it sits in relation to the climate change crisis. Professor Rupert Read then gave an impactful account of the dangers posed by the confluence of climate change and AI. A thought-provoking discussion followed, along with a great Q&A from the audience. It was a great (and FREE!) event organised by Norwich Friends of the Earth and a pleasure to be a part of. While I personally believe that AI provides extraordinary benefits to humanity and will continue to do so, some forms of generative AI (e.g. deep fakes, image generation, LLMs etc) also have an unfortunate and undeniable capacity to be misused, and their impact upon the environment can be significant. Scientists and companies need to do much, much more to develop more environmentally friendly and safer AI... And that's without even touching on #AGI and #ASI !
