More brain-power on the drill press idea and I realized I'd need to make the table adjustable too. Most of the time the head would be raised or lowered by a few inches at most. But if you have something 15" thick to drill into, then it would be good to be able to lower the table instead of standing on a stepstool to do the drilling!
So limiting the range to about 10" on the head might be enough and I'd make that motor driven, using the drive mechanism from the reclining chair I took apart a few years ago.
For the table it could just be a high / low situation, with the top part being removable to use the low table. Like two boxes stacked on each other but locked together. The bottom box could have a couple of drawers.
