After 15 years teaching literature and getting my MFA from Iowa Writers' Workshop, I've noticed something: BookTok is missing the actual great books.
The algorithm rewards trends, not timeless writing. Surface-level engagement over depth. The same five romantasy books on repeat while Joyce, McCarthy, Hemingway, and Atwood gather dust.
So I grabbed 20 books off my shelf—books that changed my life, books I taught, books that transcend whatever genre they've been shelved in—and I'm telling you why they matter more than whatever's trending this week.
These aren't the books that'll get you TikTok engagement. These are the books that'll change how you think about writing, storytelling, and what literature can actually do.
From James Joyce's devastating "Dubliners" to Cormac McCarthy's "The Road," from Revolutionary Road's gut-punch ending to why Watchmen is the greatest comic ever written—this is the real deal.
