I grew up Plymouth Brethren, memorizing scripture, leading kids to Christ at summer camp, playing in a Christian metal band. By 19 I was a youth pastor. I loved the Bible more than anything. Then I discovered apologetics — and with it, a name I was told to fear: Bart Ehrman. I watched his debates expecting him to get destroyed. I went to seminary to finish the job.
It didn't work out that way.
Because it wasn't Ehrman's books that changed my mind. It was the manuscripts themselves — the critical editions, the contradictions, the scribes who changed things. I found it all myself, with my own eyes, in the actual sources.
This is the story of how I went from fundamentalist kid to PhD biblical scholar — and how the Bible I was trying to defend is the same Bible that dismantled everything I thought I knew.
