I soaked my crochet bag in glue… and it actually worked!
This DIY crochet mesh tote bag holds its shape thanks to a glue-and-water stiffening hack.
In this DIY crochet tutorial, I show you how I made a big mesh tote bag that holds its shape by using a glue-and-water stiffening method. This is not a typical soft crochet bag project. After crocheting the mesh bag, I soak it in a 50/50 mix of glue and water, shape it, and let it dry until it becomes firm, structured and perfect as a beach bag or market tote.
The bag is crocheted with a beautiful open mesh design, handmade Romanian cord straps and a firm single crochet edge at the top. I show you the full process from start to finish: crocheting the straps, making the mesh body, working around the bag, adding the sturdy edge, sewing on the straps, and finally using the glue hack to make the bag stiff enough to hold its form.
For the stiffening process, I used glue mixed with the same amount of water, soaked the bag completely, carefully squeezed out the liquid, shaped it around a form, and left it to dry for a couple of days. Once dry, the bag becomes really stiff and keeps its shape beautifully.
