It has been almost 30 years since I first played Turok: Dinosaur Hunter on the Nintendo 64 back in 1997. Today, I am finally jumping back into the jungle to see if this legendary 90s FPS still holds up after all this time. Instead of wrestling with the original N64 controller and that infamous distance fog, I am playing the Nightdive Studios PC remaster to experience the game with smooth controls, high framerates, and clean graphics.
In this playthrough, we are taking on Level 1, known as The Hub Ruins. I wanted to see how the early gameplay feels after a decades-long break, starting out with nothing but the classic hunting knife and the iconic Tek Bow. From fighting off human mercenaries to surviving my first velociraptor encounters, jumping back into this level brought back a ton of memories of what made classic boomer shooters so special.
Nightdive really did an incredible job updating this retro shooter for modern PC hardware while keeping the original art style and atmosphere completely intact. Removing the old N64 fog completely changes the way you navigate the platforming sections and search for those hidden level keys.
