In this video, I restore an original 1989 Nintendo Game Boy (DMG-01) from discarded circuit boards into a fully functional, modernised handheld.
This poor Game Boy was literally a scrap mainboard with no shell, no screen, and torn ribbon cabkes. I assess the board, repair its botched upgrade, and then rebuild the Game Boy using brand new parts, including a transparent replacement case, a modern IPS backlit screen, and a USB-C rechargeable battery pack. Watch as this classic 8-bit console goes from junk pile to retro gaming jewel, complete with 21st-century upgrades!
During the restoration, I tackle issues like corrosion and damaged components, bringing the old circuitry back to life. You’ll see me solder fixes on the PCB, install a bright RetroSix IPS LCD, and add a RetroSix CleanJuice lithium-ion battery mod for convenient USB-C charging. No more AA batteries needed because this Game Boy now charges like a smartphone and runs for hours. I also assemble the Game Boy into a brand-new clear RetroSix shell, giving it a fresh look while preserving that nostalgic feel.
