What does each decade feel like when you edit it?
In this episode of Creatively Obsessed, @aayusucks takes one filmed sequence and re-edits it seven different ways, tracing the evolution of video editing theory from the restless freedom of the 1960s to the hopeful possibilities of the 2020s.
Each era brings its own rhythm, texture, colour and emotional language:
1960s: rebellious jump cuts and creative freedom
1970s: anxiety, silence and uneasy pauses
1980s: MTV-inspired rhythm, bold graphics and neon energy
1990s: imperfect textures, nostalgia and human rough edges
2000s: fast cuts, impact sounds and relentless stimulation
2010s: polished visuals with an undercurrent of loneliness
2020s: layered imagery, intuitive tools and a sense of hope
Created using Adobe Premiere Pro, After Effects and Envato’s all-in-one creative asset toolkit, this experiment explores more than film editing techniques. It asks how the style of an era shapes what an audience feels — and why great visual storytelling is ultimately about making people feel something true.
