Juul Thijssen | I raided a patent library: Edwardian Bustle Pad from an original 1904 Patent @JuulThijssen | Uploaded December 2019 | Updated October 2024, 6 hours ago.
My Edwardian inspired outfit needed a bustle pad, so I raided patents.google.com for ideas. It is absolutely wonderful to study old patents and fun to try and use what's in them. I chose this one because it looked like it would give the shape I needed and not add much to the width of the hips. I hope the ghost of Mr Whitney will not come and haunt me for using his patent!

The end result is not my neatest work, but still a nice experiment, very cute and it does the job. I loved using only materials I already had at home, especially the nice bit of lace that I thrifted this autumn. The sponge is very much modern and its artificial yellow shows on the end product but hey, #historicallywingingit, right?
