This might be the coolest guitar tuning you’ve never tried.
In this lesson, I’m showing you Modal E tuning on a 1963 Martin D-28 that belonged to Graham Nash. Huge thanks to @martinguitar for letting me play this incredible piece of music history inside the Martin Museum.

Modal E gives you a huge, hypnotic drone by tuning five of the six strings to E. The only other note is B, which gives the open strings an E5 power-chord sound. From there, you can move simple double-stop shapes over the drone and get that beautiful Crosby, Stills & Nash-style sound.
