While engaging with an audience member about mass shootings in the United States, Kirk was fatally shot through the neck and pronounced dead later at a nearby hospital. Investigators stated the gunman was positioned on the roof of a building approximately 142 yards (130 m) away from where Kirk was speaking. 22-year-old Tyler James Robinson surrendered himself at the offices of the local sheriff the next day. Prosecutors charged Robinson with murder on September 16.
