Everyone showed up on a gravel bike. I showed up on a mountain bike on purpose, then spent 65 miles finding out if that was brilliant or just dumb.
The bike is a Santa Cruz Blur 5, their cross country full suspension, 120mm front and rear. It's marketed as a race bike, which I could not care less about. So I took it on a 65 mile, 7,461 foot gravel day with a group of people on drop bars to see what a modern XC bike actually does when nobody's racing.
Ron's been thinking about the best gravel bike for ten years. His answer is flat bars, 120mm of suspension and 2.4 inch tires. Which is a cross country mountain bike. So this is me testing his answer.
