In this video, I made a wool shortgown to wear as a warm winter coat and go through some research into this garment and who would have worn it, and how it differs from english fashion. This garment is appropriate for continental European countries and Scandinavia and immigrants in the colonies, later in the century the United States. I wool shortgown like this would be most appropriate for the working classes or middle-class ladies for times when a more hard-wearing garment than silk is appropriate.

For a casual english version, a bedgown is more appropriate, and if you are interested in making one I highly recommend this Burnley and Trowbridge sew-a-long for it.
