In today's video we will make a question from A Level Physics on the gravitational potential harder. We will answer what is the minimum speed to throw an object from Earth so that it reaches the Moon by calculating the maximum gravitational potential between the earth and the moon by differentiating and finding an extremum. This is an excellent calculus based physics problem. It can also be used for Physics Olympiad Preparation.
The unmodified question is from Edexcel Physics 2020 Paper 2. Please note that this is not an official solution and my reasoning may be wrong and I am not affiliated with the exam board.
The paper can be found here:
qualifications.pearson.com/content/dam/pdf/A-Level/Physics/2015/Exam-materials/9PH0_02_que_20201016.pdf
(Question 16 b)
This question is excellent challenge for Edexcel Paper 2, and also for AQA A Level Physics Paper 2, OCR A Level Physics Paper 1 and in general for gravitational fields and astrophysics topic.
It can also be used for similar exam boards such as the CIE syllabus, IB Physics, AP Physics etc.
