I bought a wood lathe a few months ago and I thought it would be fun to make my own digital readout. This video is sponsored by JLCPCB. Get professional printed circuit boards for as low as $2 by visiting https://jlcpcb.com.
The plan for this project was to use a hall effect sensor and a neodymium magnet to sense the rotations of the lathe spindle. I used an arduino board to read the sensor, count the pulses, and calculate the RPM of the spindle. I used seven segment displays to show the RPM reading. I designed a PCB and 3D printed an enclosure. If you would like to read more about it, check out the project post on my website bytesizedengineering.com/projects/wood-lathe-digital-readout

As an engineer I spend most of my time problem solving and I think that's an extremely important skill. I have learned that complex problems that may seem impossible at first, can be solved by breaking them down into “byte sized” pieces. I hope that my viewers see my passion and enthusiasm for making things, and that it inspires them to make something that they're excited about.
If you’re new here you may not know that I make a lot of other cool project videos like this. If you enjoy these kind of project videos, please consider subscribing to byte sized. I really appreciate you taking the time to watch this video.
