Song name: When I Was With You
Composition, lyrics, piano, and singing were all by me. This was recorded all in one go with my phone, completely unedited. It took me many takes to get this one.
This song means a lot to me because it is quite personal. Many parts of the lyrics reflect the feelings I felt at some point after my breakup. When I first worked on this song, it was just the chorus. I uploaded a short for this chorus 6 months ago, but back then it was called "When I'm With You" and was more happy. I made the lyrics for that short along with the help of two friends.
Later, when I tried to extend the chorus into a full song, I naturally felt that it was more fitting to be in past tense, especially given the personal context that I had also experienced my first breakup ever several months prior and I still hadn't really moved on. I continued working on this song on and off. After the first chorus, it took me a really long time to come up with satisfactory lyrics. I even asked ChatGPT for some ideas but none of them really worked for me. Eventually, I would have some random flashes of inspiration, and I ended up with the lyrics in this video now.
I felt like this song deserved more than just a piano performance, so I mustered up some courage to try singing along with playing the piano. I'm not proud of my singing, but it is what it is. I hope over time I'll get better. Anyway, I tried to make the song lyrics feel relatable and pretty generalizable to any people who experienced a breakup and miss the good times. Disclaimer: I have no experience in singing, and I am pretty insecure about my voice and singing skills. I never took singing lessons, and I don't really know any technique about singing. The only times I sing is when I'm driving somewhere by myself, or the few times per year I go to karaoke with my friends. I tried to be in tune as much as possible, but I'm clearly still off key a lot of times. This was the first song I've ever tried to seriously play and sing at the same time, and I realized that singing while also playing piano at the same time makes me lose my breath a lot easier. If anyone has any advice, I'd be very happy to hear.
