In the winter of 2025 I joined a group a highly skilled boaters into my most nerve-wracking adventure yet, packrafting the Colorado River and navigating a class 7 rapids with no prior whitewater experience. Our group hiked into a remote side canyon and navigated Soap Rapids and House Rock Rapids, the first significant rapids in the Grand Canyon. Doing this trip on the shortest day of the year only made it that much more challenging. Battling cold water, intense rapids, and trying to overcome my fears of being swallowed whole by the Grand Canyon made this not-for-the-faint-of-heart adventure one of my more outlandish trips so far.
