That one cougar became the thread that unraveled everything. A closed-season kill in January 2024 launched a two-year investigation across Alberta โ and when officers finally moved, they pulled 11 cougar skins and skulls and 5 Canada lynx out of freezers and trophy rooms. Guided hunts had been selling wild cats to the highest bidder: killed after season, lured with illegal electronic calls, taken without licences.
The ending is the part that matters. Eight people pleaded guilty. Thirteen convictions. $135,500 in fines and 18.5 years of hunting bans. The system worked - because someone paid attention.
A province without cougars is a province out of balance. Their fight is our fight. We are all one wild web.
