In this educational Vocal Coach analysis, Beth Roars breaks down Janine Berdin’s stunning live Wish Bus 107.5 performance of “What if I miss you for the rest of my life?”
Beth looks at Janine’s vocal textures and how they differ from a usual “diva”: creak produced by either vocal fry or an arytenoid rattle, mouth shape, her use of slides and how she transitions through registers using head, chest and mixed voice. Janine has heart wrenching vocal cracks on her soaring high notes, all the way up to an F#!
Having risen to fame a full 10 years ago by winning Filipino singing competition “Tawag ng Tanghalan”, this marks Janine’s first solo charting track in the Philippines, released on her album “LAB SONGS NG MGA TANGA” in September 2025.
Rather than making pain sound polished or pretty, Janine uses control combined with the bravery to express vulnerability to get to the emotional truth underneath. So, is she rejecting the diva label, or reinventing it entirely?
