SHE'D NEVER BE LIKE THE OTHERS

But Arowyn already knew that. Visitors across Remeria came to Esterwick for myriad of affairs, and those visitors often brought their children. At night, the children would gather in the dining hall to share their city's most famous tales. Most of the tales were of witches and ghosts, each intended to out-scare the last. But few stories haunted the children as much as the song of the No Eyes Man.

One may come and one may go, Forget not what I tell you so.
Deep in the wood of the darkest trees, Is a place where even the sunlight flees.
Meet Him there with the Empty Eyes, The last thing you see before your body dies.
He deals not Death with knives or spikes, But rather licks you with his lies.
Run, Little Child, fast as you can, to the edge of the wood, from the No Eyes Man.
Born of a curse, strong and old, Only in those woods does his magic hold.
Fable, myth, none know are true, For those he finds, their life is through.
Get out of the wood, as fast as you can.
Faster, Faster, from the No Eyes Man.

The lyrics echoed in Arowyn’s mind as she dashed through the forest while the specter's presence chased shortly behind.

Arowyn glanced over her shoulder to see the spirit hiss as it passed through the trees like a mist as it closed in. With a quick whip of the horse’s reigns Arowyn darted deeper into the woods.

Suddenly the winds fell calm. The whispers silenced and the trees settled. The only sound was that of the horse’s hooves pounding the ground as Arowyn searched for a way out of the woods.

Arowyn remembered taunting the children troubled by the rhyme. She laughed, boasting that spirits had not existed in Remeria since the War of the Fates when the old magic perished.

One night, Arowyn crept out of her room and with candle wax wrote on the boys' chamber door, "NO ONE ESCAPES THE NO EYES MAN”. After knocking and scurrying away, Arowyn broke into laughter upon hearing the boys’ screams at the sight. Moments later, she joined the others and feigned her concern for the unsettled boys, amused by the fact that the message was written by her very own finger.

But in that moment,, Arowyn had no time for memories. She pulled herself out from the reverie and noticed her horse had begun to slow. Arowyn whipped the reigns again but the horse ignored her and slowed to a stop. “Not now, horse!” Arowyn kicked the horse's sides. “Move, damn you!”

She looked back to see nothing behind her. The ghost had vanished, but it couldn’t have gone far. Not a second later, the horse gave a shrill neigh as it jerked and hurled Arowyn to the ground.

Arowyn groaned as she rolled over to see the source of the horse’s panic. The horse was sinking into the ground! "No!" Arowyn ran to help the struggling mare but her attempts only further upset the horse.

“Hold still! You’re making it worse!” Arowyn held out her shaking hands to ease the frightened animal. There was nothing she could do. The horse plunged deeper and deeper as its body began to disappear into the Earth. Those neighs faded to faint whimpers as the ground began to suffocate the horse under the crushing pressure.

“I’m sorry!” Arowyn cried and placed her hands on the horse’s nose before peering into its gleaming eyes. “I’m so sorry…” She left her hand on the horse's nose until all she felt beneath her palm was the cold mud that had consumed her only friend.

All fell quiet in those unforgiving woods. Arowyn fell into tears and clawed at the mud. She let out of a scornful scream, brimming with anger and sadness.

Just then, a snort from behind startled her. She turned and drew her dagger, ready to kill whatever evil lurked behind. However, anger shifted to confusion at what stood before her.

There was her horse, lazily waiting at the tree to which it had been tethered; the reigns still fastened the way she had placed them, that same satchel full of apples she packed earlier that day still attached to her saddle. Arowyn turned back to the ground where that same horse had just been buried seconds before.

In the same patch of mud she had been clawing, there was a smiling face etched into the ground next to the words, “NO ONE ESCAPES THE NO EYES MAN.”

The words had been written with someone’s finger, but the rest of the ground remained untouched despite the fact that Arowyn had just been digging into it. Arowyn looked down to her hands to check for any trace of the mud. Her stomach turned as she discovered that the mud was not covering her hands as she expected, but rather one finger instead…

One single, lonely finger was covered with mud… The same finger that she had used to write the message on the chamber doors in Esterwick. Arowyn dropped the dagger and her heart sunk upon the realization… the only person who could have written that grisly message on the ground below, was her.
