A few months ago, I made a video testing ashwagandha for 30 days. I talked about stress relief, better sleep, improved workouts. The results looked good. I didn't have major issues.
Then the comments started coming in.
People warning me about:
❌ Emotional numbness
❌ Feeling like zombies
❌ Losing their drive completely
❌ Can't feel excitement or sadness
❌ Libido disappeared
One comment stuck with me: "I used to get excited about my weekend plans, but now I just don't care about anything anymore."
That's not a side effect. That's losing part of yourself.
I still use ashwagandha occasionally and feel fine. So what's different for them?
I went down a research rabbit hole. What I found:
Ashwagandha works by lowering cortisol. When you're stressed, cortisol is through the roof. Ashwagandha brings it down. That's the whole point.
But cortisol isn't just your stress hormone. It's what:
- Gets you out of bed in the morning
- Makes you excited about things
- Makes you feel alive
The theory (research is limited): For some people, ashwagandha doesn't just lower cortisol to healthy levels - it hammers it down so much that they feel like they're watching their life happen instead of actually living it.
Why do some people handle it fine while others clearly don't? That's what I investigated.
