After damaging my brand-new three-bladed propeller with a stone chip from a rough taxiway, I was left with an irritating vibration that no amount of swearing could fix. What I didn’t realise was that there’s a surprisingly simple solution to protect both the engine and the airframe from unnecessary wear: dynamic propeller balancing.
In this episode, I invite specialists from Proptech to explain and demonstrate how the process works. From attaching sensors and running high-power engine tests, to adding just a few grams of weight in exactly the right place, we discover how such a small adjustment can make a big difference to smoothness, comfort, and aircraft longevity.
I also visit PropTech’s workshop to see what goes into overhauling propellers of all sizes—from light GA aircraft to airliner blades—and learn what pilots should really be checking for during a pre-flight inspection.
