Israel is the ancestral homeland of the Jewish people, and somehow I understood that even as a Jewish kid growing up in New York City. I loved America and was blessed with U.S. citizenship, but I knew our Jewish history did not begin in New York and our story of exile was never supposed to be permanent.

For 2,000 years, diaspora Jews built communities and contributed wherever we lived, yet persecution and antisemitism repeatedly reminded us how fragile exile could become. The State of Israel changed Jewish history forever by giving the Jewish people sovereignty in our ancestral homeland.
